Paper Art Work Two.

Hi Everyone! As Promised on my last posting I have some more Final Major degree work to share with you. These are images from one of my sketchbooks. The ideas for the following two designs were taken from a 'Maritime Theme'. I visited our local Maritime Museum and took inspiration from our cities whaling history. I used the whale tail and the harpoon as a design base. I wanted to create something soft and gentle from an industry that on reflection seemed so barbaric and cruel.

This is a pattern created from the harpoon heads.

These patterns were created from the negative space of the first patterns, (I'm sure its easier to achieve this on Photoshop) however I enjoy the use of a pencil and paper more.

After great exploration, I felt the following design was the softest, therefore suited my final design idea.

With the Maritime theme still present, I tried to create the illusion of the patterns bobbing up and down in the ocean.

Working with composition, movement and flow before deciding on a final piece.

Here I was working on the actual whale tails and harpoons themselves.

I wanted the audience/viewer to see something soft and delicate on initial appearance and then to look closer to see the actual whales tails and harpoon design in the background.

Both these pieces were accepted for display in our local art gallery 'The Ferens'. I must say it was a real joy to have a piece of work on display for all to see and sneakily listen to both positive and negative comments made. Tee Hee.

Paper Art Work

Well I'm on the home straight, only one more week and my part time foundation degree will be complete. It's been a busy, challenging and enjoyable three years but I'm ready for some time out before attempting the BA Honours. I would like to share with you some of the work I produced for my final major project. Paper was my chosen media.

These are selection of my paper designs ready to create a final piece

I used many different processes and techniques to achieve these looks but for me the embossing process had to be the most flexible and creative.

I created two pieces, one approximately 3' x 2' in size and the other approximately 2' x 1.5' in size.

Each design has been cut and created by hand, long process, patience was a required skill!

I based my design ideas on the coral reef and the title of the project is, 'Jostling for Space'. I have two further pieces to show but I will leave them for another posting.
